Should I use public properties and private fields or public fields for data?

To fix this issue See this article http://blog.codinghorror.com/properties-vs-public-variables/
Specifically

cakephp - whats the $fields array meant to look like in $this->Model->read($fields, $id)

To fix this issue If you always need that data ordered by date, then in each model's PHP file add the $order variable.
code :
$record = $this->Pupil->find('first',array(
   'conditions'=>array('Pupil.id'=>$id),
   'contain'=>array('PupilAction'=>array('order'=>'PupilAction.date'))
));

Difference Between Using Static Fields That Uses Getter And Setter And Static Fields That Are Declared Public

Hope that helps Your question about memory leaks
I want to start off by saying there will be no memory leak issues here. In fact, it would be exactly the opposite of memory leaks in both cases (they're the same in this respect). You can have only one instance of a String for the DataHolder class (since it is static, it does not belong to any DataHolder instance).
code :
public class DataHolder
{
   String dataString;
}
public class DataHolder{
  private static String dataString;
  public static String getDataString(){
    synchronized(DataHolder.class){
      return DataHolder.dataString;
    }
  }

  public static void setString(String dataString){
    synchronized(DataHolder.class){
      DataHolder.dataString = dataString;
    }
  }
}

What is the difference between class fields and properties in Javascript

this one helps. I'm reading class fields proposal for JavaScript. I don't understand why the authors call it 'fields' and not properties. ,
What is the difference between the two besides the syntax?

UML Class Diagrams - Understanding Which Fields are Necessary and When To Have Public Fields

Hope that helps You are indeed on the right track. The additional class CourseProgress helps you to better represent the many-to-many association between User and Course. An alternative could have been the use of an association class.
The choice between public, protected or private properties depends on your class design and how you want to expose this information in the object model. This is far too broad to be explained here. To simplify, if the properties are data that could be changed by other objects without any consequence, then you could let it public. If however some properties can only be changed according to some rules with pre-conditions, invariants or post-conditions to be guaranteed, you'd better control the change via a method and thus make the property proteted or private.
