Get first day of first month of previous year in yyyy-mm-dd format

seems to work fine You can use DATEFROMPARTS() function in SQL Server for creating date from given year, month and date in integer as shown below. To get the previous year you can use Year() function and subtract 1 from that. First date and month is always 1 so it has been hard-coded here.
code :
declare @IntYear int = Year(Getdate()) - 1 --Previous Year
Select datefromparts(@Intyear, 1, 1)

may help you . Choosing the right datatype has much gravity.
Since you are storing date time in varchar datatype I would suggest to move it to the timestamp type.
code :
SET column1 = STR_TO_DATE(column1,'%d/%m/%Y %H:%i');
ALTER TABLE your_table MODIFY column1 timestamp;
select date_format (column1, '%m/%Y') from table1

wish help you to fix your issue You can use the EOMONTH function for this. This function is supposed to return the end of month so add one day to result:
code :
SELECT DATEADD(DAY, 1, EOMONTH(GETDATE(), -2)) -- returns 2019-07-01 on 2019-08-28 01:02:03.004

Any of those help There are a number of ways. You can use the base grep functions, but I prefer the stringr library.
code :
# Using RegEx to find any characters from the start of the string that are not
# a forward slash, then stop once a forward slash is found
df$Month <- stringr::str_extract(df$`Month & Year`,"^[^/]+") # Edited to fix mistake
# Grabbing the last 4 characters of a string
df$Year <- stringr::str_sub(df$`Month & Year`,-4,-1)
