Handling an ViewModel command on Item Select

I hope this helps . Your view model item should have a boolean property that indicates if it is selected or not. Any code that needs to be executed when the selection state of an item changes can be called in the property setter.
code :
public class ViewModelItem : INotifyPropertyChanged
    private bool selected;

    public bool Selected
        get { return selected; }
            selected = value;
            // fire PropertyChanged event
            // add call optional additional code here
    <Style TargetType= "ListViewItem">
        <Setter Property="IsSelected" Value="{Binding Selected}"/>
public class ViewModel : INotifyPropertyChanged
    public ObservableCollection<ViewModelItem> Items { get; }
        = new ObservableCollection<ViewModelItem>();

    private ViewModelItem selectedItem;

    public ViewModelItem SelectedItem
        get { return selectedItem; }
            selectedItem = value;
            // fire PropertyChanged event
            // add call optional additional code here
<ListView ItemsSource="{Binding Items}"
          SelectedItem="{Binding SelectedItem}" />

binding a command inside a listbox item to a property on the viewmodel parent

I wish this help you There's two issue working against you here.
The DataContext for the DataTemplate is set to the item the template is displaying. This means you can't just use binding without setting a source.
code :
<ListBox ItemsSource="{Binding Path=AllNewsItems}">
        <l:DataContextSpy x:Key="dataContextSpy" />

                   <Hyperlink Command="{Binding Source={StaticResource dataContextSpy}, Path=DataContext.OpenNews}" CommandParameter="{Binding}">
                       <TextBlock Text="{Binding Path=NewsContent}" />

ComboBox does not select any Item provided from ViewModel

this one helps. You are running into a very common problem, two identical Gender objects are not equal to each other!
ComboBox sees the bound selected item, but doesn't see a matching item (actually, it doesn't see a matching reference) so it doesn't select anything.

Pass selected item as command parameter vs. using a bound ViewModel Object (MVVM)

this one helps. The only real difference is readability (and potentially one extra binding for the engine to have to evaluate, but that isn't going to really hurt you in this case).
You are using SelectedTemplate either way so I wouldn't bother with binding it to the parameter and use it directly.
