Does that help xcrun xcresulttool --formatDescription shows that there is a logRef key with a unique value pointing to the log that we can query for if we know the item's ID.
Using jq, I was able accomplish this task.
code :
# find the id that points to the location of the encoded file in the .xcresult bundle
id=$(xcrun xcresulttool get --format json --path Tests.xcresult | jq '.actions._values[]' | jq -r '.actionResult.logRef.id._value')
# export the log found at the the id in the .xcresult bundle
xcrun xcresulttool export --path Tests.xcresult --id $id --output-path TestsStdErrorStdout.log --type file

around this issue The reason not to do this in unit tests is so that unit tests can execute quickly, so you don't have an excuse to not execute your unit tests.
Given your question, it sounds like you're not bothered by any delay caused by gathering this information; my recommendation is to keep it like it is, and when the delay becomes a "bother", then spend some time creating a "quick" build and a "coverage" build.

Any of those help If you try to generate tests for a class which already has existing tests in another file in the project, it will just generate an empty file as described above. Changing the filename is not sufficient, nor is using a different location within the project. Basically it seems to enforce the one-testfile-per-class convention across the entire project.

this one helps. So this discrepancy happened when I updated the templating files with the twitter bootstrap scaffolding files. They didn't have an updated Test.groovy file in the scaffolding sources.
I had to update the Test.groovy file to correspond to the new Controller.groovy file.

I wish this helpful for you One thing to also remember, there's nothing stopping you from writing functions to avoid the boilerplate.
For example I have a command line app that uses log and I wrote this function:
code :
func captureOutput(f func()) string {
    var buf bytes.Buffer
    log.SetOutput(&buf)
    f()
    log.SetOutput(os.Stderr)
    return buf.String()
}
output := captureOutput(func() {
    client.RemoveCertificate("www.example.com")
})
assert.Equal("removed certificate www.example.com\n", output)

I wish this help you This looks like a weird argument to me. When you create a controller, unit spec is created for it by default based on a template which can be easily tailored according to your need.
grails install-templates
code :
@artifact.package@import grails.test.mixin.TestFor
import spock.lang.Specification

/**
 * See the API for {@link grails.test.mixin.web.ControllerUnitTestMixin}
 * for usage instructions
 */
@TestFor(@artifact.testclass@)
class @artifact.name@ extends Specification {

    def setup() {
    }

    def cleanup() {
    }

    void "test something"() {
        expect:
        1 == 1
    }
}
