this one helps. Inside VS 2017, at least, you can open Debug -> Windows -> Watch -> Watch 1 and set a watch on a variable named $exception.

will be helpful for those in need Not without using an additional variable. Without using an additional variable you could only throw again the exception after the exception specific logic:
code :
catch (TypeAException e)
{
    // exception specific logic
    throw e;
}
catch (TypeBException e)
{
    // exception specific logic
    throw e;
}
catch (TypeCException e)
{
    // exception specific logic
    throw e;
}

it helps some times Well here I've seen this in API and other related questions: , Let's say you have two methods.
First one:
code :
public void methodA() throws IOException {

    try {

        // methodWhichCanThrowIOException();

    } catch (IOException e) {

        // //perform operations before exits;
        throw e;
    }
}
public void methodB() {

    try {

        methodA();

    } catch (IOException e) {

        // //perform operations;
    }
}

I think the issue was by ths following ,
But why cant we catch the exception thrown in a nested catch clause using an outer catch?
code :
static void exceptions(boolean b) {
    try {
        try {
            if (b) throw new FileNotFoundException("FIRST");
            try {
                throw new IOException("SECOND");
            } catch (FileNotFoundException e) {
                System.out.println("This will never been printed out.");
            }
        } catch (FileNotFoundException e) {
            System.out.println(e + " is handled by exceptions().");
            try {
                throw new FileNotFoundException("THIRD");
            } catch (FileNotFoundException fe) {
                System.out.println(fe + " is handled by exceptions() - nested.");
            }
            // will be caught by the nested try/catch at the end.
            throw new IOException("FOURTH");
        }
    } catch (Exception e) {
        System.out.println(e + " is handled by exceptions().");
    }
}

will be helpful for those in need , Simply add another try catch in the catch.
code :
try {
    try {

        throw new NullPointerException();

    } catch (NullPointerException e) {
        System.out.println("reached once");

        throw e;
    }
} catch (SomeOtherException ex) {}

I hope this helps you . First of all: your first example does not compile with Java 6 either. It will however compile with Java 7 due to new features in exception handling.
See this link for more information. Basically, starting with Java 7, the compiler can analyze exceptions thrown form a try block more precisely; and even if you catch a superclass of one or more thrown exceptions and rethrow it "as is" (ie, without a cast), the compiler will not complain. Java 6 and earlier, however, will complain.
