help you fix your problem I am using AWS Neptune with gremlin and I want to get the id of a vertex with all properties of the vertex in one query. How can I do this? , There are lots of ways, but generally use valueMap():
code :
g.V(1).valueMap(true)
g.V(1).hasLabel("person").valueMap().by(unfold()).with(WithOptions.ids)
g.V(1).
  project('id','label',' fileSize', 'mimeType', 'malwareSource').
    by(id).
    by(label).
    by('fileSize').
    by('mimeType').
    by('malwareSource')
g.V(1).
  project('id','label',' fileSize', 'mimeType', 'malwareSource').
    by(id).
    by(label).
    by('fileSize').
    by('mimeType').
    by(coalesce(values('malwareSource'),constant('N/A'))

I wish did fix the issue. You can construct a SideEffect pipe that would work. In the simple case, do this:
code :
g.v(1)._().sideEffect{it.firstname='Marko'; it.lastname='Rodriguez'}
m = [firstname:'Marko', lastname:'Rodriguez']
m.each{g.v(1).setProperty(it.key, it.value)}
g = new TinkerGraph()
g.addVertex()
g.addVertex()
m = ['0': [firstname: 'Marko', lastname: 'Rodriguez'], '1': [firstname: 'William', lastname: 'Clinton']]
g.V.sideEffect{tn = it; m[tn.id].each{tn.setProperty(it.key, it.value)}}
gremlin> g.v(0).map
==>lastname=Rodriguez
==>firstname=Marko
gremlin> g.v(1).map
==>lastname=Clinton
==>firstname=William

wish help you to fix your issue Say I have a vertex {first_name, last_name} in a graph database (Neo4j in this case). , It can be done using transform step
code :
g.v(1).transform{it.first_name + ' ' + it.last_name}
=> John Smith
is it better to get few properties from a vertex or getting the whole vertex in gremlin

I hope this helps . The cheapest will be options two and three. Returning an Element, which would be a Vertex, Edge, VertexProperty will be more costly than returning an individual result or a Map or results. Even the following is less expensive than returning an entire Element:
code :
g.V(1).valueMap(true)

this one helps. We have vertex which will store various jobs and their types and counts as properties. I have to group by the status and their counts. I tried the following query which works for one property(receiveCount) , You could use cap() step just like:
code :
g.V().has("name","marko").out("knows").groupCount("a").by("name").group("b").by("name").by(values("age").sum()).cap("a","b")
 "data": [
      {
        "a": {
          "vadas": 1,
          "josh": 1
        },
        "b": {
          "vadas": [
            27.0
          ],
          "josh": [
            32.0
          ]
        }
      }
    ]

I wish this helpful for you I think you are running into the same problem as described in this S.O. answer.
Basically, the .drop() filters everything out of the traversal and prevents any of the following code from doing anything.
code :
g.V('nodeId').has('partitionKey','xx')
.sideEffect(properties().not(has('id', 'nodeId|partitionKey')).drop())
.property('a','valA')
.property('b','valB')
