it helps some times You need to validate the email. The easiest way is to use a regular expression: There is information here. This of course, would be on the client side, when you validate your form.
If you are using hibernate bean validation, there is an @Email annotation that you can use as well.

this will help You need to look up the MX record for the host-part from DNS...but there are many corner-cases. Don't reinvent the wheel (you're bound to get it wrong), try to find an existing library. I only know the one from Snertsoft for C (integrated into the commercial milter-sender), though.
[Disclaimer: I'm a happy user of milter-sender]

it fixes the issue To solve SENT: 550550 The address is not valid. problem, you have to set sendmail_from to a valid mail address in php.ini file.
To solve SENT: 530 SMTP authentication is required problem, open hMailServer Administrator. Go to Settings->Advanced->IP Ranges->My Compter. Disable all options under "Require SMTP authentication" section.

seems to work fine You shouldn't use the user's mail to send a mail.
It's bad practice. You are kind of usurping it's identity If user uses, for instance, a gmail, and you're setting it to gmail, gmail won't trust you because he knows it never sends the email They are great chances the email falls in spam box
code :
if (mail($email_to, $email_subject, $email_message, $headers))
{
    header ('location: /?status=success#contact');
}
else
{
    echo "Sending mail failed";
}

Does that help Unfortunately this is not possible at the moment directly in the email app. Bug 874346 tracks the issue, but it is dependent on some platform bugs before it can be fully addressed.
In the meantime, the "User Story" section of that bug describes some workarounds that may help in some cases.
