around this issue Prepared statements and transactions are unrelated techniques and technologies.
You may wish to issue the START TRANSACTION and COMMIT/ROLLBACK commands directly instead of using the dedicated methods. They are functionally equivalent.

seems to work fine
Yes. PREPARE TRANSACTION is used to initiate a two-phase transaction, which is generally used if you want to commit atomically to two databases at the same time.

this one helps. Of course it will fail due to a duplicated primary key on the bar code. First do the update
code :
stm = c.prepareStatement(sqUpdate);
result = stm.executeUpdate();
if (0==result) {
    stm = c.prepareStatement(sqInsert);
    stm.executeUpdate();
}
try {
    c.setAutoCommit(false);
    stm = c.prepareStatement(sqUpdate);
    result = stm.executeUpdate();
    if (0==result) {
        stm.close();
        stm = null;
        stm = c.prepareStatement(sqInsert);
        stm.executeUpdate();
        stm.close();
        stm = null;
    }
    c.commit();
} catch (SQLException e) {
    if (stm!=null) stm.close();
    c.rollback();
}
