seems to work fine You need something with a distinct event loop --- and the best portable solution is to rely on the (already included) tcltk package. Start with its demos.
The simplest case may be
code :
> library(tcltk)
> tk_messageBox(message="Press a key")

I wish this help you The code you posted will work fine, except you can only close windows that were opened by your script (by window.open). There's no way you can close a window/tab that the user manually opened.

I hope this helps . Have you tried using the WinEnter event instead of WinLeave? In the handler you'd check to see if you're entering the preview window and if so do nothing, otherwise check to see if the preview window is open and close it if necessary (like your code above).
Edit
code :
if getwinvar(winnr("#"), "&pvw") == 1
    " do stuff, e.g. pclose
endif

fixed the issue. Will look into that further I made a function, that runs pdflatex compiler to produce a pdf file for the currently edited tex file: , Here is the working code:
code :
(defun latex-sentinel (process event)
      (message event)
      (cond ((string-match-p "finished" event)
                  (progn
                        (kill-buffer "*async pdflatex*")
                        (message "pdflatex done")))))

(defun latex-compile ()
      "Runs pdflatex on current file"
      (interactive)
      (let* ((file-name (shell-quote-argument (buffer-file-name)))
            (process (start-process-shell-command
                           "pdflatex"
                           "*async pdflatex*"
                           (concat "pdflatex " file-name))))
            (set-process-sentinel process 'latex-sentinel)))
