I hope this helps you . You may find it easier to use ConfigParser instead of searching and replacing:
code :
#!/usr/bin/python
import ConfigParser
import os

config = ConfigParser.ConfigParser()
config.readfp(open('foo.txt'))
config.set("section2", "option1", "xxx1")
config.set("section2", "option2", "yyy1")
# It's always better to write to a temporary file
# and then atomically replace the original:
config.write(open('foo.txt.new', "w"))
os.rename('foo.txt.new', 'foo.txt')

will be helpful for those in need In regular expressions . means any ONE symbol. To extract MANY any symbols use + or *. You are extracting a word until the space. I would solve this task like this:
code :
re.findall(r'^(.+?)\s', name)
# or
re.findall(r'^(s.+?)\s', name)
# or
re.findall(r'^(\S+)', name)
# or
re.findall(r'^(s\S+)', name)

I hope this helps you . You can use Series.str.contains() method:
code :
df['new'] = df.iloc[:, 1].str.contains(r'substring', flags=re.I)
In [40]: import re

In [41]: df
Out[41]:
   a       b   c
0  1    Anna  10
1  2  Barton  11
2  3     Max  12

In [42]: df['new'] = df.iloc[:, 1].str.contains(r'ma', flags=re.I)

In [43]: df
Out[43]:
   a       b   c    new
0  1    Anna  10  False
1  2  Barton  11  False
2  3     Max  12   True

like below fixes the issue What if you would locate the p elements with a specified substring (note the re.compile() part) and then replace the element's name with h1:
