I hope this helps . To have this work "nicely" with the Rails URL helpers you have to override to_param in your model:
code :

Hope this helps I think your idea to strip out the vowels will be your best best here.
Anything else, like blacklists, dictionary lookups, etc, will just be incredibly tedious, require a lot of maintenance and, ultimately, falible.

it helps some times I found the issue with what I had been doing, the regex for :month in the route wanted two numbers, whereas I was only passing in one number. Anyways, I decided that the URLs look nicer (in my opinion) without the month padded to 2 digits, so I updated my route accordingly.

I hope this helps . Jesse Wolgamott has the right idea but a couple notes...
this should go at the bottom of routes.rb so that it doesn't clobber any other routes
code :
resources :users, :path => '/'
@user = User.where(:username => params[:id])

it fixes the issue Assuming you don't need to capture whatever comes after /camp/, this nginx configuration should do it:
code :
location /camp {
       rewrite ^/.* /connect/rally_camps/register ;
}
