I hope this helps you . You can use the chrome.windows API to monitor this. You would add a listener for the onFocusChanged event and if the event returned -1 or chrome.windows.WINDOW_ID_NONE then you know that the browser lost focus:

I think the issue was by ths following , I made a simple Chrome extension - search with a form. , Try something like this:
code :
<script type="text/javascript">
function setFocus()

<body onload="setFocus()">

<input type="text" id="target" name="target" size="25" value="" />

it helps some times I've got a little issue with the focus event that I just became aware of. Apparently, focus fires when switching to another browser tab and then back again. I'd rather not have that happen; is it possible? , Try this
code :
var times = 0;
var prevActiveElement;

    $( window ).on( "blur", function(e){
            prevActiveElement = document.activeElement;

    $('input').on('focus', function() {
        if (document.activeElement === prevActiveElement) {
        prevActiveElement = document.activeElement;
        $(this).after('<br>Focused ' + times + ' times');
    }).on( "blur", function(){
        prevActiveElement = null;

it should still fix some issue Since you don't really need the popup page, I would suggest you remove it and instead move your code to open a new window in the javascript file for your background page. You can act on a click on your extension icon by using:
code :
chrome.browserAction.onClicked.addListener(function callback)

it should still fix some issue I had the same problem. My solution was to use a "dummy html" file as the new page, and everything this page did was running the following JavaScript code (in an external JS file linked to from the dummy html file):

Is there a way, using a possibly a chrome extension, to bring Chrome into focus in windows when a different app has focu

hope this fix your issue To detect switching from Chrome to another application, you can indeed use chrome.windows via a chrome extension. Also, simple firing alert() will bring the browser application back into focus.
code :
chrome.windows.onFocusChanged.addListener(function(window) {
     if (window == chrome.windows.WINDOW_ID_NONE) {
          // application lost focus
          alert('Don\'t leave me!');
