I think the issue was by ths following , I think you should go with one table for all users and the user_id.
There are not so much words in any language. By so much I understand over couple of millions. Database are just working fine with 1-2 million of records, and you won't reach that level soon considering that all words in English count over 170.000

Whereas a higher cardinality means less efficient storage, but faster read performance, because it has to navigate through less branches to get to whatever data it is looking for to narrow down the rows for the query.

this one helps. I believe what you do now, keeping sperated queries for getting a list of sites with just titles and one detailed view with description for a single given site, is good. You don't pull any unneeded data and both queries being very simple are fast.
It is possible to combine both your queries into one, using left join, something maybe like:

SELECT s1.site_name, s1.visible_name, s2.description
FROM site_list s1
LEFT JOIN
  ( SELECT site_name, description
  FROM site_list
  WHERE site_name = 'this site should go with description' ) s2
ON s2.site_name = s1.site_name
ORDER BY description DESC, site_name

wish help you to fix your issue It will partly depend on whether this is LINQ to Objects, LINQ to SQL etc. Let's assume LINQ to Objects.
Imagine this scenario:

it fixes the issue It totally depends on the environment and the way you are managing- I have to say- everything else. If the server is located on another network, on the other side of the planet, network is your bottleneck.
To make a better call I would make some assumptions: the server is on localhost, the connections are managed properly, and it is just the query itself that should be optimized. If that's the case for you, you could use Explain command the usage as explained here is very simple:

hope this fix your issue 100,000 rows is a small amount for MySQL rdbms.
You would better do fine tunning of the db server. So I recommend neither 1 nor 2.
