hope this fix your issue I am using emacs 23.1.1 on Ubuntu 10.04. I wish to program in Python with a 2-space indent. emacs looks to have a default mode for python (python.el?). , Either in you .emacs file or in a file referenced by your .emacs add:
code :
(setq-default indent-tabs-mode nil)
(setq-default tab-width 2)
;; Python Hook
(add-hook 'python-mode-hook
          (function (lambda ()
                      (setq indent-tabs-mode nil
                            tab-width 2))))

fixed the issue. Will look into that further I decided to waste my time today actually making this function exactly as I described it. I've created a function that takes data frames or functions and can be typed or clip board fed into the indent function. This will indent the code as many spaces as is desired with the space argument (default is four spaces).
code :
indent <- function(object = "clipboard", space = 4) {
    y <- if (object == "clipboard") {
        as.list(readClipboard())
    } else {
        strsplit(as.vector(object), "[\\n]")
    }
    spacer <- function(x) paste(paste(rep(" ", space - 2),
        collapse = ""), x)
    z <- if (object == "clipboard") {
        sapply(y, spacer)
    } else {
        lapply(y, spacer)
    }
    zz <- as.matrix(as.data.frame(z))
    dimnames(zz) <- list(c(rep("", nrow(zz))), c(""))
    noquote(zz)

I hope this helps you . There is the indent-region function. So I'd try mark the whole buffer, then M-x and type indent-region. It's usually bound to C-M-\, as far as I know.
